Quatrain of West Virginia
West Virginia (1863)
Mountaineers! Let me tarry in the
Blue Ridge Mountains as though
my life had a rectifying
cause,
I will cherish the natural confluence
of past fighting, present harmony
and obey nature's
laws.
I will huddle in the ravine of my ideas
(they are all sent from God)
while dissecting free
values,
I will not be influenced by the outside
world, nor will I cover my barefoot thoughts with walking
shoes.
